Townhill Park, Southampton - Phase 2 Demolition

Hughes and Salvidge won a competitive tender with Southampton City Council to carry out Phase 2 of the demolition of former flats at Meggeson Avenue in the Townhill Park area of Southampton.

Experienced demolition

After also completing Phase 1 of demolition works at Townhill Park in 2016, we were very experienced at working in this residential area of the city.

We constructed hoarding around the site before works commenced and our main works consisted of the removal of all asbestos containing materials from the existing five-storey block of 54 flats, before a comprehensive soft strip of the building.

Once this was completed, the structure could be demolished and foundations, drainage and redundant services, concrete slabs and external hardstand areas were also removed.

We crushed and stockpiled all resultant brickwork, concrete and hard inert arising’s and disposed of waste materials arising from the asbestos removal and demolition works.

Local community

As the site was located in a residential area careful consideration was taken during all works to ensure dust control measures were in place and noise and vibration were monitored to keep disruption to the immediate neighbourhood to a minimum. Site traffic movements were also planned to ensure minimum disturbance.

Efficient demolition

To increase efficiency on the project we allocated our 870-machine to the project. Being the largest plant in our fleet, at 87-tonnes, it made light work of the demolition of the structure.

The project, which ran from mid-November to the start of February, was completed on time and the site was left in a safe and secure manner for the client.
