Hughes and Salvidge completed the demolition works, a 20-week project, at the UK Power Networks site in Brixton in late 2013.
The scope of works consisted of the removal of asbestos roof sheets by hand, a comprehensive soft strip of the buildings and the removal of all existing structures including a link bridge to a building to be retained. The structure was adjacent to a main substation, therefore scaffolding and demolition by hand methods were used to minimise disruption to this area of site.
The site remained operational throughout the duration of the project and consistent communication was maintained with the client, and its employees on site, to ensure smooth liaison and harmony between the demolition site and surrounding buildings. Newsletters and weekly progress meetings took place and a contact number for the dedicated Site Manager was made available to UK Power Networks staff to call with any issues - day or night.
The UK Power Networks site, at Bengeworth Road, is situated next to a live railway line, the busy Brixton to Peckham line. Our demolition compound was immediately adjacent to the line. Dust control measures such as damping down and the use of a Dust Boss machine were put in place, vibration monitoring occurred at regular intervals, and debris netting used to ensure no disruptions to the busy line.
UK Power Networks were extremely pleased with this project, completed on time and on budget, with no disruptions to the live site or surroundings.
