Supporting Aspirations Day

Community projects

Hughes and Salvidge supported Aspirations Day 2025 last month, taking an active role in careers activities at a Portsmouth junior school.

Schools host their own Aspirations Day at a time of their choosing, with a nod to Aspirations Week, a city-wide initiative run by Portsmouth City Council (PCC).

Aspirations Day

As a strong supporter of community and school initiatives, Hughes and Salvidge were keen to get involved, as they have for the past few years. Business Development Executive, Will Spong, attended Meon Juniors school in Portsmouth, delivering a presentation about demolition career opportunities to nine classes of children in Years 4, 5 and 6.

Will showcased some of our YouTube videos from work taking place on-site, and also took along some excavator models for the children to examine. At the end of the session, he handed out hard hat stress balls and a few other goodies to the children.

He said: “It was fantastic to receive positive feedback from both the children and the teachers, it really showcased how worthwhile an event it was. It is always great to give something back to the local community.”

Aspirations Week is a chance for everyone to think about what's next for them; children can start thinking about what they might want to do in the future; young people can learn about possible career pathways; and others can explore changes in career direction.

The week sees PCC encouraging schools, early years settings, businesses and community organisations to join them in helping people of all ages to take steps towards realising their future goals. Events running during Aspirations Week will provide opportunities to explore further education options and future career prospects, as well as broader aspirations such as getting fit, learning a new hobby or going green.

In previous years, Hughes and Salvidge staff members have attended multiple schools in Portsmouth, delivering presentations on careers in demolition to children to pique their interest.

This year’s Aspirations Week is due to take place in March - visit portsmouth.gov.uk nearer the time for more information.
