Castle Market Demolition Reaches Halfway Point

The pulling down of Sheffield’s iconic Castle Market remains on course to be completed by November with our team now approximately halfway through the demolition of the site.

Smooth progress has been made by Hughes and Salvidge since demolition fully got underway in February following the decision of Sheffield City Council to close the local landmark in November 2013 after 54 years of trading.

Many of those who originally plied their trade within Castle Market now do so at Moor Market, a brand new £18 million market building situated in a different part of the city.

Below are our main achievements to date:

  • The entire meat and fish market has now been removed
  • On the Waingate side of the market ‘Lynne’s Furnishing’ and various other shops have all been demolished.
  • The former office tower block is now 95% scaffolded in preparation for ‘top down’ demolition. The remaining scaffolding is currently being put in place.
  • Demolition of the lower market block has started and is progressing towards the Market Tavern Pub.

As always, we are taking all steps possible to keep inconvenience to a minimum. We will keep you up to speed with further developments on the project over the coming weeks.
