At Hughes and Salvidge we have both experience of demolishing utilities-orientated buildings or structures, and in dealing with utility companies to ensure services and utilities are dealt with safely and effectively on any project.
A large proportion of our projects contain live services and utilities which require protecting or terminating prior to a project commencing. Before works begin on any site we ensure we are provided with isolation or diversion certificates from the client or we liaise directly with the utility companies to obtain these.
Our Utilities-Orientated Demolition Projects
Demolition of the former Aldershot Military Power Station
Hughes and Salvidge completed the asbestos removal and demolition of the former Aldershot Military Power Station (AMPS) on the Aldershot Barracks. The former power station was located near to occupied structures, adjacent to a canal and a new electrical sub-station which had to be protected throughout the duration of the project.
We also demolished the former LG factory site in Newport. The site, owned by the Welsh Government, was situated in an industrial complex constructed in the mid 1990s as a base for the LG Electronics Group.
The site was split into four main buildings/areas, including the main Central Utilities Building, a water treatment area and a water storage area. Hughes and Salvidge used a mixture of excavators with various attachments and hand methods to demolish the mostly-steel buildings in a timely and efficient manner.
The industrial park itself was still operational during the demolition works and although only had a light flow of traffic on a daily basis, this also had to be taken into consideration. The area was also surrounded by lakes, so we ensured that dust and other debris were contained to the site in order not to disturb the environment and surrounding areas.

Demolishing the UK Power Networks site in London
In 2013, Hughes and Salvidge demolished the UK Power Networks site in London. The 20-week project included the safe and regulated removal of asbestos roof sheets, a comprehensive soft strip of the buildings and the removal of all existing structures, including a link bridge to another building.
The structure was adjacent to a main sub-station, so scaffolding and removal by hand methods were essential to minimise disruption to this area of the site.
The site remained operational throughout the duration of the project, including the sub-station, so consistent communication was maintained with the client to ensure smooth liaison and harmony between the demolition site and surrounding buildings. Newsletters and weekly progress meetings took place and a contact number for the dedicated site manager was made available to UK Power Networks staff to call with any issues.
The site was also situated next to a live railway line, therefore we used a Dust Boss machine to damp down during demolition and ensure no disruptions to the busy line.
